5 Methods for Designing Stylish Multifunctional Spaces

A family is constantly changing, and so is the way they live in their home. From children growing up to new hobbies, guests, and even work-from-home adjustments—your home needs to grow with you. The solution? Multifunctional & flexible spaces that blend beauty and practicality.
As a Nashville luxury interior designer, we know that your spaces shouldn’t just “make do.” They should make a statement—all while being beautiful and functional for your busy lifestyle. These five design methods reflect how we create spaces that are ready for anything, without sacrificing sophistication.
1. Think Creatively: Dual-Purpose, Multifunctional Spaces
Think beyond one use for a room. A guest room can double as a home office, a dining area can transition into a homework station, and a den can transform into a media lounge for entertaining.
Our process: As part of our full-service home design, we take time to understand how your family lives—your schedules, hosting needs, and priorities—so we can curate spaces that work for both your daily life and your most memorable moments.

One of our clients added a large sunroom addition to their home and instead of only having furniture to lounge in, this space truly fulfilled its potential by being a dining room, TV area, and workout space.
2. Invest in Modular & Multifunctional, Convertible Furniture
Affordable luxury interior design is about making smart design investments for your home—and modular furniture is one of them. Sectionals that reconfigure, ottomans with hidden storage, Murphy beds, or modular shelving systems make it easy to adapt a space over time without a full redesign.

We have used “Lovesac” sectional pieces in several homes, including this lake house, where they wanted the flexibility to pile in for movie nights in the main living room, or move part of it away to have a reading sofa/nook in a little tucked-away corner -- or if they wanted more sleeping area for guests at the lake house, they could pull the pieces together to create a large bed for sleepovers! Multi-functional for sure.
3. Use Built-Ins & Hidden Storage for Multipurpose
For busy families, clutter can quickly make a home feel chaotic. Hidden storage—built-ins, under-bench drawers, or custom cabinetry—keeps spaces polished and ready for entertaining, even on the busiest days.

One of our favorite examples of this method was the Custom Window Seat we designed and had built in this young twin girls art room/family office. It has large drawers for hidden storage - all the “goodies” young twin girls “need” for their arts and crafts!
Another fantastic example of a recent project is that we are currently planning to install a “hidden door” feature in one of our client’s basement– it looks like a bookcase on the front, but will open to access a private office! Such a creative and dreamy way to use one space for two purposes!
4. Prioritize Flow & Cohesion in Open-Concept Layouts
Multifunctional spaces require a careful balance between separation and flow. With design and build services for busy families, we curate open layouts that still maintain defined zones—using rugs, lighting, and custom millwork to create boundaries while keeping an airy, connected feel.
In this client’s home, their front door opens to the formal living room, with no foyer or real entry, so to create a drop zone and satisfy the need for an entryway, we reupholstered this bench in a beautiful olive green velvet, added a small table for keys and such, and placed a hall tree for coats, dog leashes, and bags. The rest of the furniture creates a cozy sitting area in front of the gorgeous antique pure marble fireplace (this home was built and originally designed in the 1930’s).

5. Balance Timeless Design with Personal Touches
Your home should reflect your story. The key to stress-free home renovation is creating spaces that are both practical and deeply personal—so your multifunctional rooms don’t just serve your needs, but inspire and delight you.
Our process: We guide clients through a stress-free, full-service design experience, helping you choose timeless finishes and custom touches that elevate your home while keeping it uniquely yours.

Oftentimes, these custom touches are sourced from items that you already have and love because of their deeper value. For example, our dear client needed a pretty space to work on their computer and pay the bills. We knew this office nook was the solution, building custom cabinets and drawers - but it needed a special detail that spoke to them – that’s when we knew we were going to incorporate this gorgeous vintage chandelier that has been passed down in our client's family for generations. It was the perfect addition to make this space pop with personality!
